"The Witches" is a dark fantasy comedy film based on the 1983 children's book of the same name by Roald Dahl. The 2020 film adaptation, directed by Robert Zemeckis, is a reimagining of the story and stars Anne Hathaway as the Grand High Witch, Octavia Spencer as the grandmother, and Jahzir Kadeem Bruno as the young boy, with a voice-over narration by Chris Rock. Here's a brief summary of the 2020 film:
Plot:
The story is set in 1968 and follows a young boy (unnamed in the book and film but referred to as "Hero Boy") who goes to live with his grandmother following the tragic death of his parents in a car accident. His grandmother warns him about witches, evil creatures who hate children and devise sinister plans to get rid of them.
While staying in a seaside hotel, the boy encounters the Grand High Witch, who has gathered witches from all over the world for a secret meeting. The witches, led by the Grand High Witch, plan to turn all children into mice using a magical potion. Unfortunately, the boy and his friend Bruno are caught in the witches' scheme and are transformed into mice.
Now mice, the boy and Bruno team up with the grandmother and another mouse, Daisy (a pet mouse of the hotel manager), to stop the witches' nefarious plan. They must navigate the hotel, avoid being caught, and ultimately thwart the witches' evil plot.
The film follows their journey as they try to outsmart the witches, expose their plot, and find a way to return to their human forms. Along the way, they discover the true extent of the witches' cruelty and come up with a plan to turn the tables on them.
The 2020 version of "The Witches" adds some modern elements and changes to the story compared to the original book and the 1990 film adaptation. It's a visually striking and darkly comedic take on Roald Dahl's classic tale of witches and their wicked plans to eliminate children.
